From the stage to everything beyond it.
Before Avery D. Wilson had a career, there was movement. Raised in the South, Avery discovered dance as a language of expression, connection, and possibility. Training at Mid-City Dance Project in Baton Rouge opened the door to a life across stages, screens, studios, and international productions.
Training at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, touring with Debbie Allen, and working across concert dance, commercial entertainment, musical theatre, film, and television offered an education no single discipline could contain. The journey included DanceAfrica, Dublin Worldwide Productions, Norwegian Cruise Lines, the International Association of Blacks in Dance, and Choreographer of Nerjyzed Entertainment’s BCFX Videogame HBCU Tour.
The Expansion.
Beyond the Stage
Different disciplines. A continuing thread.
The stage was never the whole picture. With a BA from the Nelson Mandela School of Public Policy at Southern University and A&M College, Avery’s work extended into entrepreneurship, education, advocacy, and public policy. Founding and leading MOKA XLR-8, a nationally recognized dance and cheer association, brought artistry and leadership into community, touching thousands of students through encampments, training conventions, and an award-winning youth all-star program.
Early opportunities with the Children’s Defense Fund, influenced by the work of Marian Wright Edelman, helped deepen an interest in service and advocacy. Directorial work with Louisiana’s Solution to Poverty Initiative expanded that reach into civic engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration. Later, program coordination and work in reparations research and policy at UCLA’s Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies opened another chapter.
The Becoming.
The Work Still Becoming
From building a career to discerning a calling.
Faith in Jesus Christ, prayer, and reflection are reshaping how Avery understands success and what comes next. The focus is shifting from building a career around every capability, to discerning the vocational work worth dedicating a life to.
Its final form remains unknown. It may emerge through performance art, writing, or another creative expression not yet fully visible. The pursuit is one of depth over breadth: creating with intention, offering work in service to something greater than personal achievement.
Until then, the practice remains: Learn. Teach. Grow. Stay a student. Share what has been learned. Let faith shape the process, and let each season reveal what the last one could not.
